The Chef's Special for Week Ending 21/06/09
WOOHOOOOOO! It's Friday already!!! Hope you guys have had a good week. I've got some right tasty morsels for y'all this week so please don't rush off. Some ace club previews including Cabaret Voltaire's full on house extravaganza this weekend with Telefunken and Ultragroove both throwing down the gauntlet, some free mixes for you to treat your I-Pod/MP3 player with and a sneaky peak at whats coming up on Leith FM's specialist dance shows this evening as well. So enough idle chit chat from me. Let's get right in amongst it.
FRIDAY 19th JUNE 2009
Gonna kick off with some more quality electronic music courtesy of our friends at Leith 98.8FM starting with Gerry Mawhinney's Vinyl Club Show from 9.00 - 11.00pm. This week Darrell Harding provides the perfect intro with a slice of things to come and Dee-Mond gets in on the action with a rundown of Pyrate Music. Both artists will be performing at the GRV for Pulse on Saturday 27th June so if you like their style then be sure to keep next saturday night clear in your diary.
Check Pyrate Music for more info or join the Pulse event on Facebook.
Also on the show this week Mainz based German/Turkish producer Butch aka Bülent Gürler drops an exclusive guest mix showing what makes this oldschool hiphop b-boy and graff artist turned deep house and techno don a name to watch in the coming months, if his mix is anywhere near as good as his recent productions this looks set to become another awesome evening of music for The Vinyl Club.
For a wee taster of Butch's music and some more backgound info on the man himself please check out his myspace.
After the Vinyl Club don't touch that dial because my man Kenny Breaks is up next with R.S.I Radio featuring some wickedly fresh, underground techno। On warm up duties this week Ayrshire lad Voltergeist steps up to the decks armed with a crateful of wax inspired by his love of deep heavy dub, experimental electronica and good old fashioned, rebel rousing techno. Living in the heart of the Ayrshire countryside is also a major inspiration, surrounded by beautiful woodland waterfalls, rolling hills, and dramatic sunsets on the West Coast over the Isle of Arran. Sound good? You'd better believe it! He's been making his own tracks for the past 15 years and now runs his own label Microrave Records. In 2003 he met Emotiquon co-writer James Rehill and together they went on to remix artists such as Heaven 17, Enter Shikari & Shitdisco.
For more info and a cheeky glimpse into the lad's musical talents please visit his myspace।
Also on R.S.I Radio this week another absolute treat for you in the shape of another guest mix this time from Marcel Heese, resident at legendary Berlin techno emporium Tresor. He's an avid fan of Detroit, Chicago, Dub Techno, Ambient, Noise, Industrial, Breakcore and Dubstep and his current sets are an amalgamation of all those genres but in spite of such diversity he manages to keep them smooth and congruent.
In April 2008 Marcel became part of the prestigious Tresor Headquarters team, besides playing in Germany he has also visited a few foreign clubs in Poland and Slovenia. His current favourite labels and artists are: Downwards, Counterbalance, Axis, Warp, Tresor, Sähkö, Token, Transmat, FXHE, Basic Channel/Maurizio, Mojuba, Tectonic, Redshape, Bitstream, Robert Hood, Planetary Assault Systems, Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being, Drexciya, Counterpart, Deepchord, Lerosa. Influences of all those can be heard in Marcel’s exclusive mix for Leith FM, he's chilled out a bit recently, decreased his BPM, adding to increased power in the groove.
Please take 5 to have a gander at his myspace for more info and free music.
Right, and now for the clubbing previews

Cab Vol is serving a double helping of top quality house music this weekend starting with the freshest new kid on the block Telefunken tonight. This month the Telefunken massive will be treated to another jaw-droppingly tight, funky set from one of France's finest disco jokeys Phil Weeks. The Robsoul Recordings boss is back for his second appearance at the club and after the sheer gusset moistening shizzle he layed down last time he was in town the Telefunken camp are very very excited about this event. Phil's energy and enthiusiasm behind the decks have seen him play gigs across the globe from San Francisco to Dubai to Melbourne. His passion for all things funky can be heard in his many productions released on some of the most prolific labels in house. His solo work as well as his work as one half of Fries and Bridges (with Hector Moralez) is always fresh vibrant and exciting and many of his tracks can be found in the boxes of the house music elite such as DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Dj Heather and Miss Honey Dijon amongst many others.
As always Sir Alan Gray will be hosting alongside Hoss Wilson with Lel P and Carina Ramos cookin up the funk and bakin the disco cookies in the back room.
Telefunken have been bringing some of the finest house jocks in the world to Edinburgh for nearly 5 years now and next month they're pulling out all the stops once again for another of their "one off" parties, this time at Studio 24 on Calton Road. Yes on Friday 17th July the one and only MARK FARINA (Mushroom Jazz, Om Records) will be dropping in to show the house faithful why he's widely regarded as "The Daddy" among his peers. This will be the first time Mark has played in Edinburgh since he rocked Tribal Funktion (RIP) at The Venue back in 1999 and this will no doubt be one of the biggest and best clubnights happening in the city this year. Don't forget, you heard it here first on The Chef's Specials!
starring Gareth Sommerville and Craig Smith B2B and Ricky Reid
@Cabaret Voltaire, 36 Blair Street, Edinburgh
Doors 10.30pm - 3.00am
Entry £7/೫ STUDENTS
Part two of Cab's house-fest this weekend is hosted by Ultragroove and you know it's gonna be something special because Herr Sommerville and that other Edinburgh house music institution Craig Smith are teaming up for another classics night. These classics nights have become even more legendary than the usual Ultragroove nights as they are a rare occurence but if you are, like me, a bit older than most of the club kids today then these nights are the ones that give you goose bumps as Gareth and Craig will demonstrate on Saturday. Expect a truly magical journey from 70's disco through early 80's acid house, plenty of oldschool 90's chicago joints and lashings of soul drenched diva vocals.
Craig Smith for any of you unfamiliar with the name has been in the music biz for over 20 years. His djing skills have led him to gigs all over the world and he's played alongside some of the biggest names in the scene from Masters at Work and John "Jellybean" Benitez to Ashley Beedle, Kerri Chandler, Paul "Trouble" Anderson and Jazzy Jeff. As a producer Craig's work has recieved masses of critical acclaim. Labels such as Virgin, EMI, Five20 East, Soul Heaven, In Demand and Hush Hush as well as Jimpster's new label Delusions Of Grandeur have all released his tracks which he's released under various pseudonyms such as Harden Soul Project, The Shaw Height Assembly and The Way Fairers. He is currently busy making heaps of new music with his production partner Graeme Clark aka The Revenge. The pair have released tracks under many guises such as Craig Smith and The Revenge and 6th Bourough Project. They have a heap of new stuff ready to drop on the afore mentioned labels and some other exciting projects in the pipeline too.
Back room duties this week will be locked down by the one and only hijack botherer Rick Reid who has been raising temperatures aplenty of late at his residencies at Hawke and Hunter and 99 Hanover Street as well as many of the wee underground soul parties that have been going on around the country recently. Ricky's style incorporates plenty of soul, lashings of funk and more than a dash of rare boogie all smoothly blended and served with just enough spice to give you a healthy wee kick.
