The Chef's Special for Week Ending 07/06/09

Hello again folks, and welcome back to The Chef’s Specials.

Wow what an absolute scorcher of a week its been. Blue skies, blazing sunshine and some of the highest temperatures of the year so far, it can all only mean one thing, Summer is finally here at last. And although, for some people that means Big Brother fever and Friday night evictions, for the rest of us it means partying under starry skies, festivals, barbecues, and plenty more of that feelgood vibe that only vitamin D can bring.

In the north of Edinburgh this weekend, Leith Festival begins, bringing lots of live music, theatre, film, literature, spoken word, dance, comedy and various other arts forms to the old port town. From Friday 5th June through to Sunday 14th around 150 events will take place over 50 different venues featuring some international talent as well as a whole host of home-grown artists. For up to the minute news, reviews and booking information on all events in the festival programme please take a peek at the Leith Festival Website.

Further up town in the heart of the city, The Meadows Festival also takes place this weekend. Featuring 26 live acts including the massively popular Messenger Sound System, Jesus H Foxx, Mersault and The Bhundu Dance Project entertainment will be split between 3 stages over the course of Saturday and Sunday. There will also be fairground amusements, kids entertainment, stalls, arts and Capoeira demonstrations.

There is no cover charge for any of the entertainment but people will be running around collecting donations to cover costs so please give generously. For more information please see The Meadows Festival Website.

FRIDAY 5th JUNE 2009

With not much clubbing action on this coming Friday in Edinburgh I’ve decided to stay in and tune in to Leith FM’s outstanding dance music radio shows. Kicking off with The Vinyl Club, in it’s later than usual slot from 11.00pm – 1.00am. The show is celebrating a first birthday of sorts. Host Gerry Mawhinney has been championing electronic dance music of all genres for over a year now but this Friday he is celebrating one year of top class guest mixes on the show. So in true Vinyl club fashion he will be featuring two guest mixes this week. One from Jam The Box’s Jimmy “Jammin” Thomas and another from Paul Nazca of Scandium Records one of France’s premier techno labels. If you want to contact Gerry or tune in online check out the Leith FM website or you can set your radio to 98.8FM

SATURDAY 6th JUNE 2009

The Jam Sessions, downstairs@ City Café, Blair Street, Edinburgh

If after a few beers in the park checkin out The Meadows Festival or catching some shows down in Leith you feel like going out for a dance, you could do a lot worse than starting your evening downstairs at City Café. The Jam Sessions is a project put together by 3 friends from the Lothians, Darren M, Denni McCormack and Ryan M and feature the three of them playing some proper up front bumpin’, jackin’ house of the like usually heard at clubs such as Telefunken, House Arrest and Fiasco. Darren recently won the coveted IDJ Magazine Raw Talent competition and he’s looking to follow up that glory with a blistering funk fuelled house party with the doors flung wide open so everybody can come and get down. Aided and abetted by his trusty partners in crime this sure looks set to be a raucous event worthy of any party monster’s Saturday night itinary.

Doors 8pm - 1am
Free entry all night

Jam The Box presents House Of Traps and Fudge Fingas (Firecracker Recordings) @ The GRV, Hasties Close Edinburgh

Local house music heroes House Of Traps and Fudge Fingas aka Lindsay Todd and Gav Sutherland will be stopping by the GRV for what could be one of the best clubbing events in the capital this summer. Jam The box has been getting huge praise from all the city’s underground dance music heads over the past few months for its relentless energy, rolling, seething, genre busting music policy and obscenely talented and knowledgeable resident dj crew. Jimmy “Jammin” Thomas, Jammiwam and Marmalade Maslin have been friends for years and their combined record collection is any music geek’s dream. Their hard graft, no nonsense attitude and fathomless passion has helped to push their night on in leaps and bounds rarely seen in clubs these days.

They have been massive fans of Firecracker Recordings releases since the very first one and they have been going berserk with excitement over the last few days. Gavin and Lindsay’s work with Linkwood, Trus’me and other local legends Joseph Malik and Colin Steele has been getting some of the highest praise imaginable of late from some of the biggest names in underground dance on the planet, Some of their fans include Moodyman, Stacey Pullen, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, Ron Trent, Osunlade and Dj Spinna. Their style is deep, soulful, melodic house music which inspires creative thinking as well as plenty of bumpin and grooving on the dancefloor. After selling out all of their first three eps the label was forced to repress all three, complete with screen printed bespoke sleeve art, to meet a completely overwhelming demand from around the world. All this is instantly understandable the minute you actually hear the quality of the track they produce. Both Gav and Lindsay are remarkably talented djs as well regularly playing gigs around the UK and as far afield as Japan and Australia. This September sees the label getting heavily involved with Croatia’s Disco 3000 festival held in Petrcane with performances from Linkwood, Fudge Fingas and Trus’me. For a taster of their music as well as up to date information on the labels activities please check their Myspace page.

Please also take a few minutes to check out Jam The Box's very own blog for news, previews and regular free mixes from the resident djs.

Doors 10.30pm – 3.00am
Entry £5/4 all night
